EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process distressing experiences so they no longer feel as overwhelming. It’s commonly used for trauma and PTSD, but it can also help with anxiety, difficult life experiences, medical trauma, birth trauma, and other memories that continue to affect you.

What is EMDR?

Sometimes the brain doesn’t fully process overwhelming experiences, leaving memories feeling as if they’re still happening in the present. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain reprocess those memories so they become less distressing. You still remember what happened, but it no longer carries the same emotional intensity.

What to Expect

EMDR begins with getting to know you and making sure you have the skills to feel grounded before processing difficult memories. Once you’re ready, we’ll use bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) while you briefly focus on a memory. Throughout the process, you remain fully awake, in control, and able to pause at any time.

One of the things many people appreciate about EMDR is that you don’t have to describe every detail of what happened. I’ll gather enough information to guide the work, but you won’t be asked to repeatedly retell your story.

Some clients choose a focused course of EMDR to address a specific experience, while others incorporate it into ongoing therapy as one part of their treatment. Together, we’ll decide what approach makes the most sense for your goals.

Does EMDR Work?

EMDR has been extensively researched and is recognized as an effective treatment for trauma by major health organizations. Many people find that memories become less emotionally charged, making it easier to move forward without feeling stuck in the past.

Virtual EMDR

I provide EMDR through secure video sessions for clients throughout California and Florida. Research shows that EMDR can be just as effective via telehealth, and many people appreciate being able to do this work from the comfort of home.
